Generating reCaptcha Keys

Overview

Modern Retail uses Google's ReCAPTCHA v2 to help prevent bots or nefarious actors from abusing your gift cards. This article will talk a little about what ReCAPTCHA is, why we use it, and what we'll need from you in order to make it work.

In order to get gift cards set up with our integration (specifically with our Counterpoint, Epicor Eagle, and Lightspeed integrations), you'll need to set up reCaptcha keys. This is to help keep your gift cards secure, a topic we take very seriously. Follow this article to find out how to set up reCaptcha keys easily!

What is ReCAPTCHA?

If you've spent enough time online, you've probably seen google's ReCAPTCHA somewhere. It's the little "I'm not a robot" checkbox that you have to click on to proceed on a website, and it generally looks something like this:

Or something like this:

ReCAPTCHA works by verifying which users on your site are actual legitimate users, and which are bots. ReCAPTCHA uses advanced, cutting edge technology to accomplish this, ensuring that your site isn't ripe for fraud. You can read more about ReCAPTCHA here.

Configuring reCaptcha Keys

To begin, you'll want to head to the google reCaptcha admin page, where you'll want to log in to your google account. From there, you'll see a page that looks something like this:

From here, you'll want to click on the "+" button highlighted on the top right. This will open up a new page, where you'll be able to fill out information related to setting up your reCaptcha keys.

If you haven't handled reCaptcha keys before, this might look intimidating; however, it's actually quite easy to fill out. Let's start from the top:

To begin, you'll fill out the label. This identifies this set of reCaptcha keys; we recommend naming it something like "STORE NAME reCaptcha Keys".

Next up you'll select what kind of reCaptcha keys you're generating; let's take a look:

recaptcha_type.png

Select reCAPTCHA v2, and then "I'm not a robot" Checkbox. This configures your reCaptcha keys into the appropriate type for your website. Easy, right? Let's keep going.

Next you'll want to enter the domains; you'll need three of them. Here's an example:

The first two domains you need to enter are as follows:

  1. devwidget.modernretail.com
  2. widget.modernretail.com

The third should be either your website URL, or if you have a dev site, that URL. You can hit the "+" button to add more domains.

We're almost done with this page! Let's finish up the last few steps.

recaptcha_email_terms.png

In this example we have the Modern Retail Support email address, but you should enter your own (or whichever email address makes sense to connect your website with). By default, it will auto-fill with whatever email you used to log in to the reCaptcha hub.

From there, make sure you've agreed to the terms of service and checked the Send alerts to owners box, and hit submit!

Now you should be brought to the page with your reCaptcha keys!

Both the Site Key and Secret Key are important. Copy them and send them to your Modern Retail contact securely. Then you're done! You've successfully generated your reCaptcha keys.
