Allowing Backorder

Overview

Depending on a variety of factors, you may want some of your products to remain on your website, even if you've run out of inventory for that product. To do this, you need to allow backorder for these products, something that can be tweaked in the backend of Shopify. In this article, we'll go over how to allow backorder for your Shopify products.

Allowing Backorder

To begin, view your product list in Shopify. Select the product you wish to allow backorder for, and go into the edit product menu.

If an item is a simple product, simply check "Continue selling when out of stock" and save your item.

If the product has variants, check off each variant on this screen. Follow these steps:

  1. Check the variants you want to continue selling when sold out.
  2. Click on the Actions menu which is the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the variant list.
  3. From the drop down select "Continue selling when sold out".
  4. Save.

Disallowing Backorder

To make sure something won't be on your website if you run out of inventory, follow these steps

  1. Select the items that should no longer be available when sold out.
  2. Go to the Actions menu which is the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the variant list.
  3. Select "Stop selling when sold out" from the Actions dropdown.
  4. Save.
