UPC Requirements - August 2024

BigCommerce recently changed the formatting requirements for UPCs to ensure the data adheres to global standards.

As of August 15, 2024, the UPC field must meet the following requirements:

1. UPC or EAN must be numeric (ie. no symbols or letters)

2. UPC or EAN must have a length of 6, 8, 12, or 13 numbers

(BigCommerce Release Notes for August 15, 2024 announcing this change is located here.)

In regards to the Modern Retail Integration with BigCommerce, failure to meet these requirements will prevent a new product from being created in BigCommerce. To prevent this from happening, we encourage you to work with your POS dealer or reseller to ensure your UPC data meets global standards.

BigCommerce suggests the following for products that do not meet the UPC global standard:

If something other than a valid UPC is currently stored in the UPC fields, this data should be moved to a custom field or product metafield. BigCommerce Support can assist your web developer with this move.

If you have any questions regarding these new requirements, please open a Support ticket from your Admin Panel Dashboard.
