Sometimes we encounter sitemap errors in Google Webmaster Tools that prevent client sitemaps from being submitted properly. Following is an example of a possible error and how to fix. *Note: As additional errors and fixes are noted, they will be added here.
Empty Sitemaps
- You may see a General HTTP Error: 404 Error Not Found with a sitemap listed below it.
- In this case, the client does not have any categories or testimonials, so the sitemaps are empty and Google sees it as an error. When the sitemaps are empty, there's no need to include them.
- To remove, go to WordPress > SEO > XML Sitemaps. Exclude unused taxonomies by checking the appropriate boxes as shown below.
- Resubmit your sitemap and it should be fixed within 24 hours.
