We sent out a free shipping coupon for all of the customers this past year as a thank you. When I went to put the coupon in, it doesn't have a selection for free shipping. Is this possible?

No, it is not possible to use a coupon for free shipping. Coupons can either be a dollar amount or a percentage off the order total.
