People always ask me what's the best ecommerce platform on the market today. This is an impossible question to answer because like any tool you must pick the correct one for the job. It is easy to draw some conclusion by simply looking at the above pie charts:
- These 4 platforms ran 47% of the top million ecommerce sites in May 2016. However, this percentage grew to 53% by May 2017. This 6% increase is staggering considering it happened within just 1 year!
- Companies using custom, proprietary or less popular ecommerce platforms shrunk from 45% to 39% during this same time. People are adopting and moving to Bigcommerce, Magento, Shopify and WooCommerce quickly.
- Shopify grew in market share from 6% to 10% in this same year.
- A bunch of smaller players like Volusion and Yahoo Store are not growing and many are actually shrinking in market share. Companies instead are opting to move to Bigcommerce, Magento, Shopify or WooCommerce.
Google Trends seems to tell a similar story.
