Overview
Gift card allocation refers to how we handle it when a $40 gift card is used on a $50 order, or vice versa. How we allocate these funds is important; you don't want someone under or overpaying for an order, and you want to make sure that gift cards only "gift" someone with the correct amount of funds. In this article, we'll talk about how we handle gift card allocation with Modern Retail's Gift Card Integration.
Allocating Funds
There are two scenarios we want to look at here.
- What happens when someone uses a gift card with more funds than the order total?
- What happens when someone uses a gift card with less funds than the order total?
Luckily, these are both pretty easy to discuss!
In the first case, Modern Retail tracks how much was spent using a given gift card. If someone uses $50 of a $60 gift card, we'll track that, so the Admin Panel knows that there's only $10 remaining. You can actually look this up inside the Admin Panel too; the Gift Cards menu in the Admin Panel displays all purchased gift cards and the remaining balance on each of them!
In the second case, the discrepancy is noted during checkout, and the customer is asked to enter an additional form of payment.
It's that simple! If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us with a support request in the Admin Panel, or to peruse the Gift Card section of our support library.
